Ronda

This small town located in southern Spain, Andalusia. Even though the city of Ronda is not that big, it has an international reputation. This is because a number of greats in history have spent a lot of time there. For example, the famous American writers Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. In their works, they describe how beautiful the area is and how great the beauty of the city is. These are the characteristics of this place. Everything revolves around the beauty. That beauty can actually be found in everything in this place.

If there's one thing Ronda is known for around the world, it's the deep rift along which the city was built. This gorge was created over time as it was cut further and further by the river Guadalevin. Because of the cove, the city also falls into two parts.

The gorge that splits the city in two and its location in this area require several bridges to connect the two parts of Ronda. These bridges are many centuries old. As a result, they are no longer just practical. They have also become places of interest on their own. The bridges you should definitely see are the Puente Viejo, Puente Nuevo and Puente Romano. These bridges are all from just after the Middle Ages. Because at that time a lot had to be done by hand, it took sometimes up to almost fifty years to build them. The result is therefore even more impressive.

Ronda has a long history. Therefore, in the field of culture you can also find many special things. For example, the city was at the forefront in the development of bullfighting. While people nowadays think differently about bullfighting, this is of course something that belongs to the country and area culture. To be able to learn more about this, you can visit the Plaza del Toros de Ronda. The Plaza del Toros, located in the city centre, was built in the 18th century, and was developed by the same architect as the Puente Nuevo. This old arena from the eighteenth century contains several museums where you can learn a lot about these customs. The bullring of Ronda is the oldest in Spain and it can accommodate 5,000 people.
