Story 6: Fuengirola

17 juni 2020 - Leeuwarden, Nederland

Fuengirola is located in the south of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea near the towns of Torremolinos, Marbella and Mijas. Fuengirola, like many other coastal towns in Andalusia, was originally a fishing village. Nowadays, it is a seaside resort with a beautiful boulevard of over 8 kilometers. Along this boulevard are Andalusian traditional tapas and local seafood restaurants and it is one of the liveliest places for going out on the Costa del Sol. You will find more than 300 restaurants, bars, pubs, shops, discotheques, clubs, lounge bars, salsa and all other kinds of music to dance to.

Fuengirola is located in the province of Malaga and its name is of Castillion origin and bears no relation to Roman rule and Arabic rule. Here, the Phoenicians developed a settlement that academics claim to have stood near the hill on which the Romans later built a castle. This castle is called Sohail and became the town's emblem. From this 12th century fortress you have a magnificent view over Fuengirola and the Sierra de Mijas mountains. This castle is situated strategically on a higher part of town. It was built by the Moors in the 10th century, and served to protect the estuary. It was also used in Roman times, because of its favourable location. The castle has been gravely neglected since the loss of its military role. It was thoroughly renovated since the 80's. It is now a tourist attraction with five exhibition rooms and a beautiful view over Fuengirola and the sea.

Plaza de la constitucion

This is Fuengirola's most famous square and is home to many restaurants and cafes. It is rather busy here in the summer. Especially in the evening it is worth a visit, thanks to the intimate lighting, a cozy atmosphere is created when the sun sets and typically there is live music. A lovely old church stands in the center of the square: Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario and baptisms and weddings are often organized in it.

Market

One of the attractions of Fuengirola is the market which is held every Tuesday. This market is located on the Feria grounds and you can find clothing, food and local products. The market attracts locals as well as tourists from all neighbouring towns. The market attracts locals as well as tourists from all neighbouring towns.
